A Case Study in Allergies

A Case Study in Allergies

We chatted not long ago about allergies in our Diabetic Dogs. The case study that I am going to share with you is about a sweet little girl named Ellie Jewel. She is not diabetic, but I share this today to let you know that all allergy issues are treatable. Little EJ came into a Westie Rescue in Tennessee underweight, with horrible skin issues caused by allergies. She is just a puppy and to see her was just heartbreaking! Her transformation has been nothing short of miraculous in just a short 7 weeks. She continues to improve daily through the diligent, loving care of her Foster Mom, Miss Patsy. This is what this sweet girl looked like when she came into rescue. Prepare yourself…

You can’t even tell that this sweet angel is a purebred Westie. Let’s not ask ourselves how this could possibly happen, suffice it to say that it did happen and that this little angel was in need of some tender loving care!

Here is the protocol (from an amazing dermatologist) that brought this sweet girl back to a happy, healthy, energetic puppy:

FOOD: No beef, chicken or dairy of any kind whatsoever. You MUST read the ingredients carefully. Feed an exotic protein like lamb, kangaroo, rabbit, duck, salmon, fish or low fat port. For allergies the food must be grain free and low carb. Carbs = Sugar = Yeast. Yeast infections become bacterial infections if left untreated. A high quality food like Zignature has these novel proteins mentioned above. You can top kibble with a novel protein to encourage the pup to eat. Supplement food with Omega 3, Vitamin A and Vitamin B (PetTabs Plus & Welactin Plus)

Supplement also with a good probiotic for optimal gut health (Mercola Probiotics for Pets)

BATHE: DAILY with miconohex-triz OR Head & Shoulders original with ZINC. Scrub with a soft brush and don’t use high heat if you blow dry. You’ll want to cut down hair really short so that your pup will dry quickly and will make scrubbing with the soft bristle brush much easier.

MEDICATION: 100 mg ketoconazole daily for the fungus/yeast and continue this long term. If skin infections are present, give a round of cefopodozime to kill bacteria. Give one Zyrtec each morning. If ears are infected, administer Posatex drops, followed with a warm ear infusion LETK antibiotic.

You can give a Benedryl gelcap at night for mild itchiness.

Every time your pup comes in from outside, you’ll need to wipe down legs and feet. Wipe the folds in the face and legs again at bedtime, baby wipes are recommended for this.

So, kudos to you for making it through this post so you can see what sweet EJ looks like just 7 short weeks after coming into rescue and into the loving arms of Mama Patsy. Drum roll please…

Just 7 weeks with the proper treatment will make a HUGE difference in how allergies affect your sweet pup. Please don’t let your pup get to the point that sweet EJ was in. Can you imagine if she were Diabetic what her condition would have done to her BG (Blood Glucose) numbers?!?!

The moral of the story is that there is always a road back from allergies!
