Ahhhh... Spring and Your Diabetic Dog

Ahhhh… Spring and Your Diabetic Dog

This is the time of year that we all wait for, snow has melted, the spring flowers are coming up, the trees are turning green again and along with that there is pollen in the air and all of the creepy crawlies are coming back out. So now is the time to get ahead of all the allergy stuff and begin the treatments for fleas and ticks.

Let’s start with treating your yard or deck with some Wondercide to keep the fleas and ticks off. When I lived in Texas, I had a service once a month that treated my yard to keep all of the nasties away. My service was an organic one so that my boys weren’t at risk with toxic chemicals. If you have control over what chemicals are used in your area, try to find a service that is nontoxic to keep your pup safe. I am a huge fan of Wondercide for both yard treatment and topical treatment for our pups.

I bought the yard spray on Amazon and treated the yard and bushes at least once a month, more often if it was a rainy time. For those of you in warmer climates, you may need something that is a bit stronger or you may need to treat more often. So that took care of the yard.

Wondercide also makes pet spray now that you can spray right on your pup or spray on a cloth then rub it on your pet. It comes in many fragrances now so I’m sure that you’ll find one that you like. Another homemade remedy is to use organic apple cider vinegar (ACV) and water. I made a mixture of 2 parts water to one part ACV (apple cider vinegar) and sprayed my boys before every walk and every time out in the yard for potty or play. Your pup will only smell like salad dressing for a few minutes. LOL These two things worked beautifully for me.

Another option to treat your yard and deck is Diatomaceous Earth.   You can find it at most home improvement stores. I would look for the organic variety. It’s very effective against fleas, ants, beetles, centipedes, crickets among others. It won’t hurt you or your pup so it’s very safe for indoor and outdoor use. You just sprinkle it in the yard or on the deck and just inside your doors to keep these little critters away.

Moving on to pollen… ugh. We know that it’s out there, just look at what a mess your car is if you leave it in the driveway. Or have a look at your patio furniture. If it isn’t covered in pollen yet, it will be soon. How do we deal with this? Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones whose pup isn’t affected by seasonal allergies. If so… YAY! If not, now is the time to get your vacuum cleaner bag or canister changed and prepare to vacuum numerous times a day or week.

When you come back from a walk or potty break, wipe your pup down with a damp cloth, have a foot soak ready and do the best that you can to keep the indoor pollen at a minimum. This will help you too. Don’t forget to vacuum your pup’s bed and favorite places to nap and lay around. There are some over the counter human meds that you can give your pup for seasonal environmental allergies. Claritin and Zyrtec among them.

Also brushing your pup at least once a day will keep the pollen down. This will also give you the opportunity to keep an eye out for fleas or ticks on your pup.

Be diligent and thorough to keep both you and your pup happy and symptom free. Above all, enjoy the warmer weather!
