Celebrations with Your Diabetic Dog

Celebrations with Your Diabetic Dog

I’m sure that like me, you are wondering how to still celebrate special occasions with your pup now that he or she is diabetic. It seems that so much has changed and now you are feeling like birthdays and sugarversaries (the anniversary of diagnosis) are just another day. So let’s discuss how to make those special days still special.

Usually on a special day, I bought my boys a new collar or new toys, so food wasn’t a way that we typically celebrated, but I think that I’m in the minority here. We are asked all the time, “How can I make my pup’s birthday special?”. There are definitely ways…

A while ago, I did a post on homemade treats for your Diabetic dog. In that post, there were some recipes that are very easy to make and we can just alter them a bit. An all-time favorite are the turkey breast meatballs. Here’s the recipe so you don’t have to scroll all the way back…

Turkey Meatballs

1 lb of ground turkey breast or ground chicken breast

1 cup of diced Kale or spinach (or any finely diced veggie)

1/3 cup of egg whites

1 tbsp of pure pumpkin

Roll into small meatballs or press in to an 8” x 8” pan and bake at 350 degrees for 25-28 minutes. If you use the pan or cookie sheet, you can cut the mixture into small squares once cooked.

Now, to make a little celebration “cake”, maybe press the mixture into a muffin tin and bake until cooked through. There’s our “cake”. Now, to frost the cake either use fat free plain yogurt or some warmed up fat free cream cheese. Decorate with some small pieces of green beans or perhaps some bits of chicken breast or the crumbs at the bottom of the PureBites bag.

So to follow that up, maybe later in the day you can put some low sodium chicken or beef broth into some molds with some bits of chicken breast and whatever veggies your pup will eat and freeze them for a frozen treat.

If your pup isn’t a fan of the meatballs, you can use a Mini Joy Cone and fill it with whatever treats your pup loves and frost it on the top with the fat free plain yogurt or fat free cream cheese mentioned above.

frozen version of the cone is to put some pureed plain pumpkin and some fat free plain yogurt in a Mini Joy Cone and put it in the freezer.

The point is that just because you now have a Canine Diabetes diagnosis, it doesn’t mean that there will never be a fun celebration ever again. Make some “cake” and enjoy!
