Christmas Treats for Your Diabetic Dog!

Christmas Treats for Your Diabetic Dog!

Christmas is almost here! That means it’s time for goodies of all kinds to be made, stockings to be filled and presents to be wrapped. If you want to spoil your sweet dog even more than you already do, I have put together some easy recipes for delicious treats. I also have a list of treats you can buy in-store that are safe for your diabetic dog! Grab a cup of your favorite caffeinated beverage and let’s get to it!

All these recipes have been tested out in my kitchen and are all puppy approved!

Jerky Treats – you can use any lean meat for this recipe: chicken breast, turkey breast, London broil and white fish (cod) are all great options.

Meatballs are a classic treat that your dog WILL LOVE! You can use extra lean ground turkey or ground chicken breast, just make sure that you drain the veggies well or you will get soggy meat piles!

These Egg White Veggie Treats were a huge hit in this house, I have used a variety of cooked vegetables, but using green beans were the biggest hit in the house since they don’t smell “too green.” Add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese and your dogs may just drool!

Full disclosure: Frank my nondiabetic is not a fan of green beans, fresh, cooked, pureed or dehydrated. When I tested these dehydrated green beans I sent bags to friends and their dogs loved them. They are a hit with any dog that likes veggies! Make sure you use whole green beans, the first batch I made were cut green beans and they shrunk to nothing.

Dog gummies…another huge hit in this house. You can make these with different types of gelatins if your dog has a protein allergy, and you can make these with agar agar although the texture is a bit different from gelatin. Using homemade bone broth and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top make these even more appealing.

If you do make these with gelatin they are also a great source of collagen!

If you aren’t up to making homemade treats there are great options that are healthy for our diabetic dogs. These can be purchased at most pet supply stores and of course, Amazon. Make sure you check ingredients before purchasing treats for your diabetic dog. Flours, starches, molasses, glucose, sugars can be found in certain products and will raise blood glucose levels.

  • Himalayan Yak Chews
  • Bully Sticks
  • Pure Bites
  • Tendons - turkey or beef
  • Cod Skins

Great product alert! Lick pads are fabulous, they keep Fido busy and are a great distraction tool to use during testing blood glucose and injecting insulin. You can stick them to the refrigerator, dishwasher, cabinets or flat walls because they have little suction cups on the back and they are made of silicone so they wash easily. PetTest offers these, click here to go to the Silicone Dog Lick Pad for Distraction/Anxiety.

Get that nose working while giving Fido a delicious treat! Snuffle mats are great for our diabetic dogs, especially if they have diabetic cataracts or are blind.

If your dog a is chewer you can still give them a kong, just fill them with healthy options like pure pumpkin, plain Greek yogurt and pureed lean meats can all be used.

I hope this blog has helped you find some treat options for your sweet pup. They deserve healthy treats, especially during the holidays!

Taking a moment to wish everyone a very happy holiday. May you have a warm, festive and joyous holiday!

Until next week stay comfy and caffeinated!
