Energy Boost for Pets

When our dogs are diagnosed with diabetes there is a lot we need to learn and knowing how to treat a hypoglycemic event is critical. The same goes for dogs that are not diabetic but experience hypoglycemic events, the following are several reasons a dog may experience hypoglycemia:

  • Working dogs can experience exertional hypoglycemia, this is also called hunting dog hypoglycemia.
  • Service dogs that spend extended periods of time in public.
  • Diseases like insulinoma, liver, kidney, cancer and Addison’s.
  • Toy breeds are also at risk for hypoglycemia especially when they are puppies.

“How much dextrose or glucose do I give my dog?” During an emergency like a hypoglycemic event dosing a dog the correct amounts can be confusing. The great news is that PetTest has made giving dextrose easy and dogs love the meat stew flavor.

Each box of Energy Boost for Pets with added B-12 and Antioxidants includes three squeeze tubes. These are easy and convenient to take on walks, hikes, car trips or out in the field while working and should be kept in your hypoglycemic kit. The added B-12 and antioxidants further the recovery and health of your pet!

Dosing for Energy Boost for Pets is simple. Each squeeze tube is1 mL and has 4.16 grams of dextrose.

Dosing Instructions:

  • Small dogs (e.g., Chihuahua) – give 1 mL (1 squeeze tube)
  • Medium dogs (e.g., Cocker Spaniel) – give 2 mL (2 squeeze tubes)
  • Large dogs (e.g., German Shepherd) – give 3 mL (3 squeeze tubes)

Standard protocol for humans per the American Diabetes Association (ADA) is the 15-15 rule, have 15 grams of carbs and check blood glucose levels after 15 minutes. This protocol is also followed for hypoglycemic dogs, the exception here is that dogs do not weigh what an adult human does so Energy Boost dosing has been adjusted for size.

What to do in case of a hypoglycemic event:

For blood glucose levels below 70 mg/dL (3.88 mmol/L)

  1. Treat with Energy Boost for Pets to raise blood glucose levels quickly.
  2. Feed a complex carb and protein snack to keep blood glucose levels up.
  3. Test blood glucose levels in 15 minutes.
  4. Steps 1, 2 & 3 should be repeated every 15 minutes until blood glucose levels are over 70 mg/dL (3.88 mmol/L).
  5. Contact your vet for further treatment.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

If your dog is having a seizure, wait until the seizure is over before administering product. Go to the nearest vet of ER vet for treatment, this is an emergency.
