Homemade Treats for Your Diabetic Dog: Part 2

Homemade Treats for Your Diabetic Dog: Part 2

It’s summer for many of you and what better way to pamper your Diabetic pup than with some frozen treats!  In our last post, we talked about baking treats for your pup, now we are going to chat about some frozen delicacies!

We have some very creative people in our community ( CDSI) that go that extra mile for their pups when it comes to treats.  Let’s get started.

Yogurt and Pumpkin Puree Treats

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Depending on the size of your dog, you will either use a teaspoon or a tablespoon to make these frozen delights.

1 tsp. (1 tbsp.) non-fat plain yogurt

1 tsp. (1 tbsp.) pure pumpkin puree ( NOT pie filling)

Place dollops of the yogurt on your cookie sheet; follow that with a dollop of the pumpkin puree on top of each yogurt. Place the cookie sheet in the freezer until the treats are frozen.Once frozen, place the treats in a Ziploc Freezer bag for storage.

Broth and Veggie Ice

Use a large baking dish or small bowls depending on how big your pup is.

Fill the dish or bowl about ½ full with low sodium chicken or beef broth, cut up some chicken breast and dice some veggies and add them to the broth.Freeze until solid. When it’s time to have an outdoor treat, set the dish or bowl in warm water to loosen it from the sides, take it outside and flip it over to let your pup enjoy this frozen treat.

You can also use this inside in your pup’s water bowl if you work all day and are trying to encourage your pup to drink water.

One thing that is worth trying if you haven’t already is making bone broth.  It’s very nutrient dense and I have yet to meet a pup that doesn’t LOVE it!  It’s great for arthritis or aches and pains and overall gut health in our senior pups.  I drink a cup every day and it’s wonderful!  There are many recipes on the internet for humans, but if you’re sharing with your pup, leave out all the spices and seasonings.

There is a wonderful video by Dr. Karen Becker that you can find at this link:  I use a crock pot instead of the stove top.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI-vo8td7ME
