So Now You Have A Diabetic Dog

So Now You Have A Diabetic Dog

I read a staggering statistic over the weekend. That statistic is that between 2011 and 2016, there has been a 900% increase in cases of diabetes in pets. Take that in... 900% increase! That is astounding to me. We see evidence of this statistic in our group. We are adding over 100 members a week to our support group. In fact in the last 28 days, we have added 706 new members! And that is just one group!

Okay, now I have picked my jaw up off the floor and moved on. I don’t know if you felt prepared when you left your vet’s office after your diagnosis appointment. If you did, kudos to your vet! I was not one of those lucky ones. I understand vets not wanting to overwhelm us, but what they don’t understand is that being under-prepared and scared isn’t ideal either. My experience is here.

What is the most important thing you need to do to successfully treat this disease? You need to learn to test BG (blood glucose) at home. I know that it can seem daunting at first, but you must overcome your fear. I promise you that there are many places that you can test your pup that won’t hurt them. Even more so now that we have the PetTest Genteel for you to add to your testing supplies. More on that later.

What you will need:

You need a pet BG (blood glucose) meter. The most popular one in my group (over 15,500 members) is the PetTest meter. It is fast, accurate, and very user friendly. You can find it here. There is also a new kit that includes the PetTest Genteel which is a painless lancing device that many use to get a blood drop to test. You can find that here, and use promo code SAVEWITHPETTEST at checkout for a 30% discount. Interested in the standalone PetTest Genteel Device? We're happy to discount that as well with promo code GENTEELSAVINGS.

Lancets. You’ll need to order some lancets. There are 2 kinds, the twist top lancets that you use with the Genteel device or with the lancing device that came with your meter. The other type are safety lancets which are also one use lancets but get a bigger blood drop.

Syringes: You must use the proper syringes for the insulin that you are using.

     Novolin: U-100 syringe

     Vetsulin: U-40 syringe

Ketone Strips: These are very important especially early in diagnosis when your pup’s BG (blood glucose) is running high. Using these strips will save you a bunch of money if ketones are present. Detecting them early is HUGE!

You can buy all of these items individually, or you can buy them all together at a huge savings here.

Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page for the daily questions and for the weekly giveaways.

You’ll notice that for most of the products or groups that I mention, the text is linked to a website where you can purchase that item or a link to join the group mentioned. Just click on the colored text (red or blue, depending what device you are on) and it should take you right to the item or group.
