Toxic Foods for Dog

With the holidays here and family & friend feasts, our floor surfing snoopers are likely to get a hold of some crumbs or dropped “treats” that are not diabetic approved. After all, our pups are opportunists and accidents happen. Here are a few quick tips just in case.

Anything grain based (think stuffing or bread), potatoes are carbs, some are simple and some are complex carbs. You can push water, and monitor for ketone levels, but blood glucose should level out within 24 hours.

Sweets are simple carbs and will spike blood glucose quickly but should burn off fairly fast. Push water and monitor for ketones as well.

High fatty foods can cause pancreatitis and/or gastrointestinal upset. You can give Pepto Bismal to help coat the GI tract. Monitor for any symptoms of pain, vomiting, loose stools, lack of appetite, lethargy.

If your dog ingests chocolate, here is a handy calculator: Vets Now Chocolate Toxicity Calculator .

Below is a toxicity list for reference.

Xylitol ingestion is always an emergency, please contact your vet or an ER vet as soon as possible.
