Being Prepared For Your Diabetic Dog During the Pandemic
We have talked many times about having supplies that you need now and having extras just to be safe. This pandemic has definitely affected more than just our day to day lives, it has affected how readily we can get supplies. What does that mean for us? It means don’t wait until the last minute to order your necessities.
Unlike grocery stores, PetTest has all supplies in stock. Where that becomes an issue is when we ship. The United States Postal Service (USPS) and other delivery companies are experiencing major delays in some markets. If that is the case, even if you pay for expedited shipping, your order will not get to you in time if you have waited until the last minute to order. So, save yourself the money of paying for expedited shipping that likely won’t help and just plan ahead.
Another thing to understand is what days of the week the company that you’re ordering from ships. For example, at PetTest, our warehouse is closed on the weekends. So if you order on a Friday evening, your order won’t process and ship until Monday. In this scenario, expedited shipping is not going to help you. Nor will it help you if you are shipping to an “overburdened” market.
We all know that Chewy is running low on stock as are some other companies. How do we work around that? Good question… The way I see it, you have two options. The first is that you can find another diabetic dog friendly food to have on hand in the event that you run out of your usual brand. The second option is having some food in the freezer that you can thaw and cook up quickly to feed until your food order arrives. Or maybe some canned chicken in the pantry for just this occasion.
You can also do a hybrid of the two above and use some home cooked food to stretch your normal dog food a bit farther. You can also have some diabetic canned food on hand in the pantry to stretch your kibble until your shipment arrives. If you can’t get out to the store, maybe use some scrambled egg whites to help stretch your kibble until your shipment can get to you.
The moral of this story is that we need to do our best to have some extra supplies on hand in the event that we get caught short handed. I know that not every budget allows for this, so do the best that you can and get creative with ways to make what you have last longer.
I pray that you are all safe and healthy and that this crisis passes quickly.
