Public Service Announcement!

It was brought to my attention last week that Levemir insulin is being discontinued in the USA so I went to the manufacturer’s website and it is true that it is being discontinued in 2024.

Per Novo Nordisk, Levemir is being discontinued in the USA due to global manufacturing issues and decreasing patient coverage.

Timeline:

• The Flexpen will be discontinued April 1, 2024 with expected supply disruptions starting in January 2024.
• The Levemir vials will be discontinued on December 31, 2024.

We have seen expiration dates on Levemir for 2025 so stock up on Levemir if you can.

Optional long-acting insulin:

The AAHA has listed Lantus for use in dogs and cats so it may be an option. Lantus is manufactured by Sanofi and is a U100 long-acting insulin and comes in vials and pens.

• Lantus – 10 mL vials
• Lantus Solostar – 3 mL pens
