The Holidays Are Coming... Keep Your Diabetic Pup Safe
I know that it seems early to be thinking about this, but it really isn’t. In just 3 short weeks, Thanksgiving will be upon us and just a few short weeks after that, it’s Christmas. If you have a newly-diagnosed diabetic in your household, things will change a bit. Not drastically, but they will change. No better time to think about it than now before the holiday pressure arrives.
Entertaining is a big part of the holidays. Everyone that may be at your house may not be aware that you have a diabetic dog. Now, because of the pandemic, entertaining may look different this year. There’s no telling if we will be restricted in 1.5 months like we are now. So, let’s play out these scenarios both ways.
Scenario one: Nothing much changes between now and then so we maybe just have a couple people over for dinner. Please, make them aware that your pup is now diabetic. That means no “sneaky snacks” under the table. You can assure them that you will have a bowl of “safe snacks” for your pup available that they can feel free to share with him/her.
Scenario two: Let’s say that quarantine is lifted. While this would be GREAT news... it can pose certain risks to your “sugar baby”. Especially if the holidays is the first time that you are able to gather your family! Just be sure to give your guests the “101” on what this means for each of you, and how it will change things for your gathering. The biggest rule is no “sneaky snacks”. Make sure that you have diabetic friendly snacks available for people to give your pup. A bowl of green beans perhaps or some PureBites. That should do the trick.
Also, keep in mind that the excitement of having people around can affect your dog’s numbers. That said, you’ll want to do a couple of spot checks throughout the day.
