Time Changes and Your Diabetic Dog

Time Changes and Your Diabetic Dog

It’s almost that time of year again that we set our clocks for Daylight Savings Time (November 3, 2019). The easiest part of this is setting the clock. Thankfully, this time change for Fall we set the clocks back so we don’t have to deal with the sad eyes from our pups because they think that we have forgotten to feed them.

First let’s deal with feeding and injections. Just go by the clock, there is no rocket science here, we have the one hour of wiggle room in our daily schedule anyway, this is one of the two days a year that it is used by the clock.

Before you go to bed the night before the change, just reset all the clocks in your house. The good news is that if you go by the clock on your phone, it will automatically reset for the time change. If you go by the time on your microwave, you need to be sure that the time is reset before you turn in for the night.

The easiest way to do this Fall time change is to just do it in one go, meaning that you just feed and inject according to the new time on the clock. Now, if you have a pup that is not a morning dog and is a challenge to feed in the morning on your best day, you may need to get creative when it comes to feeding them an hour earlier. I might suggest that you take a very short leash walk to get their system moving and maybe inspire them to eat their breakfast. If that won’t work, try to engage them in a little play, hopefully something that involves a little treat that may get their digestive juices moving.

There are some people that will start 2-3 days early and do 15 or 30 minute increments. I can understand that for the Spring change because your pup has been on a strict 12 hour schedule and if he or she is anything like my Max, they have a very precise internal clock that says, “It’s time to eat… NOW”! Personally, I’m not a fan of time changes, but we do what we have to do. If during the Spring change, you need to give your pup a little snack to hold them over until it’s time to feed and inject, you can, just make sure that it is pure protein or a veggie that won’t affect BG (Blood Glucose).

For this change (Fall), your pup will be eating an hour earlier and if they are food motivated, you will almost see the joy in their eyes! So to sum up… For the time change, just go by the time on the clock. You will both get used to it in a week or so!
