What Do I Need For My Newly Diagnosed Diabetic Dog?

I’m assuming that you have all of the basic supplies for your newly diagnosed sugar baby. Food, a meter and strips, etc. Now let’s talk about the less obvious things...

A tag for their collar: one that says, “I’m diabetic and insulin dependent “. You can order these tags on Amazon, Etsy, Chewy or any other website that sells dog supplies. It doesn’t need to be fancy, you can just go to the pet store and buy a regular tag and engrave it.

If your pup is microchipped, you need to call the company and update the information. While you’re on the phone with them, verify all the other information as well. Have you moved since you got your pup microchipped? If so, update your address and any other information that is out of date.

Always, always get copies of the vet’s notes whenever your pup goes in for a visit. Keep them in a file folder so that you have them all in one place. We all know that if something happens and you need to go to the vet over the weekend or after hours, your vet’s office will likely be closed. If you have all of your receipts and the Vet’s notes, this visit will be less expensive and more efficient. You will have copies of everything including the last blood panel results, what if any medications were given, etc.
